Perennials in the Garden

Almost all of the plants in the garden and landscape are perennials, as any plant that persists season to season is 'perennial'. Tree, shrubs, and many grasses and vines are perennials. In garden vernacular when we refer to perennials we are referring to herbaceous perennials.

Herbaceous perennials have foliage that dies to the ground during dormancy and roots that persist during the dormancy period. One of the many advantages to growing herbaceous perennials is they come back year after year.

note: *indicates perennial species native to the United States. The perennial flowering at the top of this page is bleeding heart.
